Historically, a hospital’s emergency department was not always the best place for older people. Medical centers around the country are taking note, setting up separate emergency departments or instituting separate policies for emergency geriatric patients.

The author discusses the Geriatric Emergency Department Collaborative, which brings geriatric care into the emergency room.

The growth of the initiative and core tenets are reported: “There are more than 280 accredited geriatric emergency departments in 41 states and four countries, and the goal is to have 500 by the end of 2022.”
