Engaging Clinical Preceptors to Prepare Advanced Practice Nurses to Care for Older Adults

One of the ways to facilitate attainment of clinical competency of nurse practitioner (NP) students upon graduation from an accredited NP program is to have a committed cadre of clinical preceptors that are experienced practitioners willing to share their expertise and time with students.

NP educators are often challenged to find preceptors for their students while recent graduates tend to gauge the right time to step up to the challenge of serving in this important role.

At the 2020 Virtual GAPNA Annual Conference this year, the general session scheduled for the afternoon of September 24, 2020 entitled, “Engaging Clinical Preceptors to Prepare Advanced Practice Nurses to Care for Older Adults,” will be presented by four members of the GAPNA Education Committee.

This expert panel will present approaches to engage advanced practice nurses (APNs) to consider serving as preceptors for students who will manage the care of older adults.

For APNs who desire to become preceptors, strategies will be shared on how to set realistic clinical expectations for students and recognize the level of student progression.

Guidance on how preceptors should document care that is provided when working with a student will be addressed. Attendees will be familiarized with the latest edition of GAPNA’s Gerontology Resources for APRN Preceptors and Students and given suggestions on the value of using the toolkit for clinical teaching.

For nurse educators, recommendations for realistic approaches to recruiting and retaining preceptors including students in distance education programs will be discussed.

Strategies determined to motivate preceptors to engage in continuous clinical teaching will be shared. Finally, web-based resources for preceptor training will be presented.

We hope you will join us for this informative presentation. For GAPNA members interested in joining the Education Committee, our regular meeting is scheduled at 8:00 p.m. EST on the second Wednesday of each month.

While we will not have a meeting during the virtual conference this year. Please contact GAPNA if you are interested in joining the Education Committee.
