Describe a day in your life.
I work full-time at UNCW as a Professor in the SON, teaching three courses per semester. I also conduct interdisciplinary research with a focus in geropsychiatry, involving dissemination through publications and presentations. Moreover, one day a week, I see patients for Thriveworks via telehealth.
What inspired you to work in geriatrics?
My paternal grandmother, the only one I ever knew, lived in a skilled nursing facility for the last year of her life while also receiving hemodialysis treatments three days a week. She was very happy and content in the LTC facility, actively participating in many clubs and seemingly thriving during her time living there. Most people get sad and depressed when entering a LTC facility, but she became happier and livelier. This showed me that age is just a number.
How do you see the field of geriatrics evolving in the future?
Unfortunately, the future seems bleak as many healthcare professionals are either leaving the field of geriatrics or have seen a significant decrease in students interested in entering this field. However, I am part of the All Ages, All Stages, NC work group as an advisory committee to the governor’s office for healthy aging. GAPNA leading the charge to keep a geriatric specialty for advanced practice nurses is also promising for our field.
What is your favorite part of your job?
Since I have a teaching and clinical practice focus, I truly have two loves. One is teaching and preparing students for their future in caring for older adults. The other is caring for older adults and witnessing healthy aging.
Hobbies/Favorite activities?
I love spending time with my family and family game nights. I love the mountains and the beach! I am a true animal lover with three dogs, one cat, one tortoise, and seven chickens.
Describe where you hope to be in 5 years in your career.
In 5 years, I hope to be securing NIH funding and truly improving policy associated with aging and older adults.
How long have you been a GAPNA member?
I have been a GAPNA member since 2013.
How and why did you get involved with GAPNA as a leader?
I first joined GAPNA when I heard about the Geropsyche SIG starting in 2013. I then chaired the Geropsyche SIG as I felt I understood the SIG and that I was prepared. I have served on the nomination committee for GAPNA and volunteered at conferences to moderate sessions. Giving back to the organization that gives me so much is why I have and continue to serve GAPNA.
Any workplace honors you’d like to mention?
I have received the DAISY award for faculty teaching excellence.
Anything else you’d like us to know?
I am honored to have been nominated for this award.
