Fixing Your Vision May Reduce Risk for Alzheimer’s
According to an NIA study, correcting older adults' eye vision could have prevented up to 100,000 dementia cases in the United States. About 1.8% of cases of dementia in the country are associated with visual impairment. That number will increase to 250,000 cases by 2050.
Eye exams, eyeglasses, and cataract surgery are all methods of fixing vision that may reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s and related dementias. Vision issues require more work for the brain which may be destructive. If older adults don’t treat their vision impairments, it can lead to a loss of stimuli, leading to a change in their daily habits and routines.
